Presentaions Part 1Review

It was really neat to see everyone's project.  There were many different editing styles and the subjects were all interesting.

Kelly- International UNH- The audio was difficult to hear and understand at some parts.  I like the basketball clip, it showed a movement to the words that people were saying.

Alexandra-  The Fire Fighters-  I really loved your creative pictures such as the eagle view picture.  Maybe you could add pics of a fire or of a flood they referenced too.  It was great that you added the stats to the piece.

Emma- SHARPP - I think if you slowed down the photo transition you could choose the more powerful ones in your slide which would really make a difference. I really like the photos you showed of her walking alone at the end.  The blurred photos at the bar were nice as well.  It was awesome that you tackled such a tough topic.

Brian- Whiffle Ball- Your interviews were excellent; they were both descriptive and informative.  I really liked your use of interchanging photos with video.  I think you could have talked a little more about the league and the teams themselves- How are they funded?

Peter-  The silent driving video was really cool!  I thought it seemed a little like a documentary instead of a multimedia news project.  Maybe you could add the issues of the new town ordinances into the conversation to make things interesting.  I also thought you could show pictures of parties and the destructiveness that comes with living off campus because the photos of the house you showed were all neat and clean, which probably isn't like many off campus living places.

Week of 10-17

http://www.youtube.com/user/TNHstaff#p/a/u/0/AMOoqSbU2nw
With a bit of technical difficulties, Spencer and I produced this video. It still needs some work but it is something that took a lot of time and work and can easily be made better.  We ran into the problem with Spencer's mobile me account not allowing us to access the video so we could combine it with what I gathered.
Perhaps transitions and a more defined ending could make this video better.

As far as my goals for my project go:
Contact Holly V. (former staff member from GSGWM)
Find out about instances of struggles with other areas of girl scouts

I have been working on both of these and am confident that these are obtainable goals for me.

My Final Project

I want to cover the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains.  In 2009 they had to deal with huge cutbacks.  They got rid of staff members and had several staff double-up on duties. They also had to discontinue programs that they usually had every year.
The year 2012 will be the 100th anniversary and they are already in preparation for events.  At the same time they are working a campaign against cyber-bullying.  This could be my angle because there have been a lot of events concerning this topic around the country lately.

For content I could talk to the director of the program.  The council office is in Bedford, NH and there are several people who could talk about Girl Scouts and the program.  I could find girls who have been involved with this campaign.  With patience and luck I could find someone who has been effected by cyber-bullying.

The other angle I could take is that there is a national committee being put together  to make girl scout more efficient and make programs and camps more relevant to the 21st century and areas of the country.  The annual meeting for the regional council takes place in November.  I could cover this which is being incorporated with the national committee.

Final Project Ideas

I have been thinking about this project since before I was signed up in the class actually.
These are the ideas I'm most fond of:
1.Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains exopse.
These is a struggle to get older girls to stay with the organization.  The project could focus on how the organization is pushing to get the attention and retention of middle school and high school aged girls. From the projects, to the new staff, to the budget cuts this could show behind the scenes of an organization that's been around since 1912.

2. A profile of a local Miss NH pageant. This could be a short documentary on how the crown is deceiving and the stereotypes people have toward pageants.  There are 6 titleholders at UNH who all are involved with hours of community service, at the same time attending pageant events, and keeping balance with school and work.

3.Children's Miracle Network.  By talking to the children in NH who are effected by critical illness and who benefit from CMN people can understand how exceptional this cause is which serves over 170 hospitals in the U.S.

Becoming a Photographer...

Taking still shots was not something unfamiliar. I always take pictures with friends and of events I volunteer at.  Taking photos for this class though I focused on what the picture I took would mean and represent to the viewer.  I tried to take abstract photos and ones that captured a mood of people (and my precious dog Noble).  I think that getting a picture worth 1,000 words will come in time.

This Multimedia Course

I'm excited to take this course to say the least.  I think this course should be a requirement for all journalism students because multimedia is engraved in our culture now and is an essential piece of the intake of news.  I have been on the lens side of the camera in the past; this course will take me to the view finder and put my eyes and mind through a new perspective.  I have worked on the school newspaper website taking and editing videos for the sports section.  My skills with this are very basic, but I bet that will change once I complete this course.  The only part I think at this point I'm nervous about is the video aspect because formatting and editing issues that I've had working on things in the past haunt me.
I know this class will make me a better journalist which is why I chose it.
